Step 1: Introduction to DataSnap

DataSnap is a platform for measuring the economic impact of cultural and artistic events. It takes into account variables such as visitor spending, expenditure incurred by event organisers, their investments, and the job opportunities created by these events. It's easy to use and customisable, so organisers can easily calculate the economic impact of their events. The results offered by the digital calculator inform the decisions of operators in the cultural sector, fostering sustainable development and enhancing the value of their essential role in society. The calculator generates a detailed report quantifying the economic impact of a cultural event, whether it's a music festival, an art exhibition, a theatrical performance or any other cultural event, and its flexibility means that it can be customised for each event by entering specific data.

Stage 2: Defining the sphere of impact

Before measuring the economic impact of a cultural event, it is essential to define the sphere of impact, i.e. a specific city or region where the event takes place, as the territorial framework for the impact analysis. This delimitation plays a crucial role in classifying event investments, expenditure and interventions as territorial on the one hand and non-territorial on the other. This makes it possible to consider financial flows that contribute directly to the economy of the selected area, such as subsidies or spending by visitors from outside the area as non-territorial. During this process, it is essential to seek the greatest possible accuracy to avoid confusing local participants with non-local ones. Determining the impact measurement territory is defined by :

  • The area benefiting from most of the expenditure
  • The population or catchment area affected by the event
  • The existence of statistical data on the scale in question
  • The commissioning organisation or partner requesting an impact study
  • The distance/time pairing between the day visit and the stay
  • The existing administrative division
  • The different methods of measuring impact
  • Step 3: Understanding the model used to measure economic impact

DataSnap uses the Maurence model, an economic impact assessment model. This model provides a comprehensive view of the primary and secondary effects on the local economy. By using the Maurence model as a basis, the accuracy and reliability of the economic impact calculations are guaranteed. To measure the creation of complementary economic activities linked to the propagation of the initial contribution of resources in the local economy, a Keynesian-type multiplier coefficient of 1.13 is applied. This coefficient is taken from the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development report entitled 'Illicit Financial Flows and Sustainable Development in Africa' published in 2020, and is chosen specifically for users in sub-Saharan Africa because of their financial constraints in carrying out economic impact studies on their cultural events. The main aim of this economic impact calculation tool is to help users in sub-Saharan Africa to assess the impact of their cultural events despite the financial constraints they face.

Stage 4: Exploring data processing resources and tools

In order to obtain reliable and relevant results concerning the economic impact of the cultural event, it is important to gather all the relevant data. In the resources section, various documents are available to facilitate this task, guiding the collection of visitor data and the processing of event organisational data. The quality of the data collected plays a key role in the accuracy of the results. It is recommended that you take the time necessary to obtain information that is as accurate as possible. Incomplete or inaccurate data can distort the analysis and limit the reliability of the results obtained. Accurate and complete data strengthens the credibility of the economic impact of the event, as the information collected will serve as a solid basis for feeding the calculator and producing a report that will highlight the economic impact of the event in the host region. It is therefore essential to take the necessary time to gather relevant data.

Step 5: Calculate the economic impact

Once the data has been collected and processed, go to the calculator section to enter the form with the data collected in the appropriate fields. Each field of the form has its own importance in measuring the economic impact, which is why it is necessary to ensure that all fields are filled in with the correct data, as the quality of the data entered directly affects the accuracy of the results. Once all the fields on the form have been filled in, the calculation process continues by clicking on the 'Calculate' button. The digital calculator processes the information entered and performs the necessary calculations to automatically generate an economic impact report for the event, providing an analysis of the financial impact generated. The report presenting the results of the economic impact of the cultural event is now available. It is presented clearly and concisely, with graphs and tables to make the results easier to understand. An interpretation of the results is necessary to fully understand the results of the evaluation, and it provides an opportunity to better understand the financial impact of the cultural event on the local community. In addition to viewing the economic impact report directly on the digital calculator, there is also the option of downloading it in PDF format. Downloading the economic report is a considerable advantage, as it provides users with a permanent copy that can be accessed offline, allowing them to keep a tangible version of the results obtained, making it easier to communicate and disseminate key information to the stakeholders involved in the event.
